Sympoiesis, 2021
Sympoiesis; Donna *Harraway’s replacement term for Maturana and Varela’s concept of *autopoiesis, which she objects to on the grounds that no ‘thing’ makes itself. Sympoiesis means “making-with.” Nothing makes itself; nothing is really autopoietic or self-organizing. Sympoiesis is a word proper to complex, dynamic, responsive, situated, historical systems. It is a word for worlding-with, in company. Sympoiesis enfolds autopoiesis and generatively unfurls and extends it.
Donna J. Haraway, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene, 2016
This installation is a way to think with multi-organisms, storytelling and fact telling; a patterning of possible worlds and possible times through material-semiotic worlds. This piece thinks with a host of companions in ‘sympoietic’ threading and tangling with the viewer.
Utilising a ‘biopolitics of the senses’, I challenge traditional approaches to the human sensorium, emphasising olfaction as well as microbial and embodied intelligence. Through research and ‘techno-sensual’ artistic exploration, I open a new discourse in the realms of cognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning, introducing concepts of the sensorial ecology of intelligence, the machine microbiome, machine ecosystems, and ‘biologised’ machines.
